Top 10: Getting to Work, Part 2

You may recall, we recently looked at the top 10 counties in terms of population density. Now, compare that list to the top 10 counties in percentage of workers who use public transit to get to work:

County/Population Density

County, State Estimated population density in 2009
New York, NY 71,165.65
Kings, NY 35,971.74
Bronx, NY 32,759.30
Queens, NY 20,862.46
San Francisco, CA 16,874.78
Hudson, NJ 12,743.34
Suffolk, MA 12,232.71
Philadelphia, PA 10,656.73
District of Columbia, DC 9,636.68
Alexandria City, VA 9,236.72

County/Estimated percent of workers who commute to work using public transit in 2009

County, State Estimated percent of workers who commute to work using public transit in 2009
New York, NY 59.58%
Kings, NY 57.34%
Bronx, NY 53.70%
Queens, NY 47.11%
San Francisco, CA 34.78%
Hudson, NJ 33.33%
Suffolk, MA 30.94%
Philadelphia, PA 30.72%
District of Columbia, DC 28.33%
Alexandria City, VA 25.31%

As you can see, they match up very closely to one another. Perhaps this suggests that Alexandria City is being under-served by public transit. Though it is similar to that of Washington, it has just half the rate of public transit usage (only 16.78%).
