PolicyMap is used to educate students about the geography of environmental injustice in the "Sociology of Diagnosis and Environment and Health" course taught by Dr. Victor Perez, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware.
“It is an absolutely phenomenal teaching tool. It’s real data from real sources that students can use from anywhere that we can also manipulate.”
Dr. Perez wanted to find a way to best design a course illustrating environmental justice issues for students not majoring in geography or social sciences.
He decided to utilize PolicyMap’s 3 Layer Map tool to allow students to visualize and identify how certain social phenomena associated with environmental justice concentrate geographically. By using race, poverty, and brownfield data, Dr. Perez was able to pinpoint neighborhoods in Wilmington that appeared to be located in polluted areas.
