Block Groups of Note: Liberty Island

One of the interesting things we noticed in the 2010 Census was that Liberty Island, in New York Harbor, had a population of two. We took a guess as to who the first resident is (hint: she has green skin), but weren’t sure who else lived there.

Liberty Island

Unfortunately, the answer was recently revealed in a New York Times article about the effect of Hurricane Sandy on the island. It turns out that resident was one David Luchsinger, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The Times surmised that he was “probably the last full-time resident of Liberty Island.” He lived in a house on the island owned by the federal government. Though he left the island before the storm hit, his house was destroyed.
